This week you will learn in your own by going through the following. The purpose of the learning is to make you familiar with qualitative case study.

1: Go through the slides and if you have nay question about the content, ask it by posting a comment to this blog post
(http://elgg.cite.hku.hk/dchurchill/files/59/523/Session6.ppt )

2: Read more about case study process from this web page: http://www.gslis.utexas.edu/~ssoy/usesusers/l391d1b.htm

3: Check the study that I completed before. Here are the slides of presentation of this case (http://elgg.cite.hku.hk/dchurchill/files/59/524/DanielsStudy.ppt ). Also read my paper (you can locate if through our library’s electronic data base, e.g., Proquest):

Churchill, D. (2006). Teachers' private theories and their design of technology-based learning. British Journal of Educational Technology, 37(4), 559-576.

4: Complete the following group task: Locate a research paper that presents one case study. Write brief summary (up to 200 words) of the paper and post this in your blog. Comment to a post of at least another two groups. Make sure that all the tasks are completed by the next time we meet in the class on 4th July.

Task for next week (Session 5)

Before we meet in the class on the 20th June, I would like all groups to complete one task. Focus of our last session (S4) was Correlation research. By now you should understand what the focus of Correlation Research is, and how such data can be collected and analyzed. Your group should discuss some possible question that can be classified as Correlation Research. In your blog propose potential correlation research questions, how could data for the correlated variables be collected, and provide argument how answer to that question can contribute to improvements in some aspect of education/teaching and learning.

Feedback to All Groups of Review of the Selected Research Papers

I decided to make this blog post rather than to comment to each of the groups’ blogs. I noticed that all of you have done good work. However, I like to emphasis something important. When you review a research paper you must to the following:
  1. I there clear research question?
  2. Does the methodology answers this question, (collects and analyzes appropriate data)?
  3. Appropriate background to the study, that is, why doing this study and what were its objectives.
  4. Is the presentation of results clear and in line with the methodology.
  5. Is the an appropriate discussion of the results, and presentation of implications for practice, theory and further research.

These are all important points which you must also consider when you write and self-critique your own research-based papers.
